A Letter to the Side of You That Holds Back
Dear You,
I see how hard you’ve been trying. I also see the moments when you get in your own way, not because you don’t care, but because you care deeply. You want to protect yourself from disappointment, rejection, or the fear of failing. And so, without even realizing it, you hold back. You procrastinate. You shrink. You tell yourself, “Maybe later. Maybe never.”
If no one has said this to you before, let me be the first: I understand why you do this. It makes sense.
What looks like self-sabotage is often a response to fear. Fear whispers, “If I don’t try, I can’t fail.” Fear says, “If I stay quiet, no one can hurt me.” Those responses may have once felt safe. But over time, they can also keep you stuck.
Here’s what I want you to know: fear is not your identity. You were created with purpose, and even when you stumble, that truth doesn’t change. The God who formed you also calls you forward, not into perfection but into trust. Staying hidden may feel safer, but Scripture reminds us that “perfect love drives out fear.” Love, God’s love, is stronger than the fears that whisper in your ear.
So, the next time you notice yourself holding back, pause for a moment. Take a breath. Instead of asking, “Why am I like this?” Try asking, “What would it look like to take one small step forward in faith?”
You don’t need to fight against yourself. You don’t need to do everything at once. Growth happens step by step, with grace carrying you through each one.
You are not broken. You are learning. You are becoming. And you are already deeply loved.
With care,
A Fellow Traveler
